Quad Quips: Mid-Season

Submissions undergo light copy editing for clarity.

MLQ athletes have a lot to say and now we’re giving them space to broadcast those opinions weekly. “Quad Quips” is a series consisting of player thoughts and feelings from around MLQ. Each week a randomly-selected batch of athletes are sent a number of questions and prompts for which to respond. The majority are open-ended though multiple choice surveys are sometimes included.

Chicago Prowl - 17.2% of respondents

Minneapolis Monarchs - 17.2% of respondents

San Antonio Soldados - 13.8% of respondents

Kansas City Stampede - 13.8% of respondents

“Chicago is going to expose the Monarchs real quick at the superseries.” Nicholas Love, Detroit Innovators

“2-1 for New York v.s. a weaker Boston team, come on y’all.” Peter Lawrence, Austin Outlaws

“The Soldados, despite having multiple Ds in their name, don't play it. How tf do you let LC drop 120 on y'all 😂” David Banas Jr., Detroit Innovators

“The top 2 teams of every other division are there because they earned those spots. Kansas City just outlived other players in the south.” Brandon Kubena, Houston Legends

“The Soldados are certainly the favorites going to their series against the Stampede, however, the past has shown anything can happen in the Cattledome. With a 72% win rate over the last four years playing at home, Kansas City is in prime position to secure an upset if San Antonio doesn’t bring a full roster.” Ryan Hsu, Detroit Innovators

Whip out the magic 8 ball and give us your predictions for the rest of the MLQ season.

“Charlotte beats a weak Washington roster. Chicago picks the other side of SA and the finals will be SA vs CHI.” Annika Kim, New York Titans

“NY takes out SA in exact fashion as last year.” Jayden ZT, Austin Outlaws

“SA cruises through the rest of their schedule but struggles in champs once they have to play their full strength team. Too many cooks in the kitchen, but ultimately they pull it off in a 2-1 win vs NY in the finals.” Juan Acevedo, Houston Legends

“NY claims the East (duh), Chicago chokes against Minneapolis, and KC continues to show the world why the Cattledome is the hardest place to play, taking the South division title.” David Banas Jr., Detroit Innovators

“Houston is going to finally beating the odds and make Champs after not qualifying for however many years straight!” Jackson Herdade, Kansas City Stampede

“Boston wins champs and Emma Persons jumps through a folding table.”  Ben Zimet, Minneapolis Monarchs

“Jay Stewart jumps through the tall hoop next time.” Liam Zach III, Chicago Prowl

“North division isn’t really going to have much movement until CLE-DET, otherwise it seems positions are pretty set. East division seems spicy though, not sure why but I feel like WAS can’t be slept on. And South… truthfully I have no south ball knowledge. Sue me.” Adam Thompson, Cleveland Riff

“San Antonio wins it all but Boston gives them a good fight.” Austin Cruz, Charlotte Aviators

“4 East Coast teams make it to the quarter finals at champs and a new champion will be crowned at the end of it all.” Jordi Sancho Jr, Charlotte Aviators

“Prowl go 18 - 1.” Matt Melton, Chicago Prowl

Who is the most underrated player in the league right now? Why?

“Jade Gray - they seemed to have two good back to back series AND it's their first time making roster 👀” Annika Kim, New York Titans

“Riley Starrs: 12-15-13 with 3 turnovers is arguably the best statline in the league across 6 games.” Nicholas Love, Detroit Innovators

“Athena Mayor doesn’t always have the flashiest stat line but she keeps the Boston chaser engine running.” Peter Lawrence, Austin Outlaws

“Alex Tidler. That kid is insane, but we won’t get to see enough of him because he’s only going to get 6 games before champs.” Brandon Kubena, Houston Legends

“Swathi Mannem. She led Chaos Quadball Club to an elite 8 finish for a first year team. She has a cannon for an arm and is infamous for her seeking ability. If she isn’t a starter on Boston, I’ll riot.” Nivash Jayaram, Kansas City Stampede

“Nathan Jun for Admirals. I know he didn't get to play the first series but that man was BY FAR the most skilled and least dirty player on that Virginia team and almost single handedly brought them back in the final against Creighton with NINE goals.” Jackson Herdade, Kansas City Stampede

“Matthew James Troy is a force of nature who will annihilate anyone unfortunate enough to be in his path. He’s got kindness in his heart and murder in his veins. In my nightmares, I often see the brutal visage of Matt Troy obliterating me whilst on his unstoppable rampage to the hoops. He’s also great at karaoke, so he really can do everything.” Ariana Zhang, Chicago Prowl

“Me, coming back from injury after playing the best quadball of my career. Monarchs gonna get squashed.” Liam Zach III, Chicago Prowl

“Gwen Pratt: a growing and glowing player who dominated the field against the Raiders. An incredibly strong utility player, they were a beam of encouragement on Detroit’s bench.” Grey Scott, Toronto Raiders

“Kailey Fugate. She's been buried on a deep Chicago depth chart forever and finally gets her chance to shine. and by shine I mean tackle.” Matt Melton, Chicago Prowl

“Peter Brechting (CLE). Genuinely a well balanced chaser/beater utility player with experience that fuels solid decision making. It’s a shame they seem to be chasing more this season, they’re really the only beater on that team I remotely think about.” Ryan Hsu, Detroit Innovators

Who is the most overrated player in the league right now?

“Entire Cleveland Roster: Welcome to champs but you’re about to get run through when you come to Detroit.” Nicholas Love, Detroit Innovators

“The entire NORTH division is overrated.” Juan Acevedo, Houston Legends

“Tate Kay- bro was getting cooked by Boston beaters.” Leah Osborne

“Brittany Taylor. Someone said she was "one of the top beaters in the league" last quips. Good one, she's not even the best beater named Taylor in the league.” David Banas Jr., Detroit Innovators

“Lee Hodge, everyone’s acts like he’s the only difference maker on Charlotte and it just isn’t true.” Brandon Kubena, Houston Legends

“Lindsay Marella. Never talked to her but people can't be saying she's the greatest ever and then she's out there getting dunked on by rookies.” Jackson Herdade, Kansas City Stampede

“Tate Kay. Ojas told me he sucks.” Ariana Zhang, Chicago Prowl

“Brian Melchior is like if an NBA team ran their entire offense through Guerchon Yabasele.” Ben Zimet, Minneapolis Monarchs

“Entire Titans First Line cause they cooked by Chef Max Havlin. Crazy how y’all give up the ball more than you can score it.” Austin Cruz, Charlotte Aviators

“Justin Dewick. Was the starting beater against Houston but you could argue he could’ve/should’ve been 3rd string.” Marcos Sandoval, Chicago Prowl

“Zachary Armantrading (NYC). Tells us to watch them every quad quips only to put up worse stats than every rookie of the year candidate. Put up a double-double in your next series and maybe I’ll go back and watch you play.” Ryan Hsu, Detroit Innovators

Water Cooler: What else do you want to talk about or comment?

“I think Boston's the new team to watch - they'll make it further with the youngest team they've had in a while much to everyone's surprise.” Annika Kim, New York Titans

“Sam Magner COOKED vs New York excited to watch her play the rest of the season.” Leah Osborne, Chicago Prowl
Editor’s Note: Check the stats.

“If I had a go-to at-home quadball fit for MLQ champs, it would be an Ottawa jersey.” Austin Cruz, Charlotte Aviators

Taunting is Legal

“@CLT yall might as well forfeit against us with the roster you're bringing, but thanks for letting us get reps!” Annika Kim, New York Titans

“Stop giving Lachlan Craig quad quips, every time he opens his mouth his team gets swept.” Nicholas Love, Detroit Innovators

“Zach Armantrading with more quad quips than minutes played in the Boston, New York Series.” Peter Lawrence, Austin Outlaws

“Damn Toronto, y'all already got eliminated 5 weeks into the season lmao 🤣 😂” David Banas Jr., Detroit Innovators

“Minneapolis got lucky that Cleveland was busy this weekend 🥱 might’ve been a new Joe on top.” Brandon Kubena, Houston Legends

“San Antonio poached so many good players and is still gonna play "Many Men" as their walkout song again.” Jackson Herdade, Kansas City Stampede

“Joe Lombardi wouldn’t make Prowl roster.” Leah Osborne, Chicago Prowl

“Admirals showed this week there still needs to be whimsy in the sport. They believe the brooms really make them fly, that's why they leave their feet on every tackle.” Jordi Sancho Jr., Charlotte Aviators

“Why is Detroit always trashing Cleveland here? Archer Melton is 2' 5" right now and he punches up higher than Detroit.” Matt Melton, Chicago Prowl

“Adam Thompson (CLE): after comparing our performances against Toronto it seems that I was better in every category having played half the drives you did. That’s odd because I could have swore that week two you said you were better. Maybe you meant better at being scored on and losing control?” Ryan Hsu, Detroit Innovators

“Sorry Toronto, there’s always next year for Champs. Seems like you all are in the trash for a reason.” Kevin Oh, Cleveland Riff
